Schedules of Short Courses, academic 2008/2009

1. Microeconomics for Health Applications ( 1 - 26 June 2009 )
The course is designed to prepare a non-economist to apply microeconomic theories to health systems. The topic will include theory of consumer or patients behavior and theory of producer or health care provider, health care markets, uncertainty and health insurance.

2. Macroeconomics for Health Applications ( 29 June-24 July 2009 )
This course is also designed for a non-economist to understand national economic system of which health is becoming a major part. The course will cover the major macroeconomic tools and indices that will have impact on health or can be affected by health.

3. Health Care Finance ( 27 July - 21 August 2009 )
This course aims to enable participants to analyze recent efforts of developing countries to finance and organize health care. The practical objective is to apply methods of economic and policy analysis to health care financing in the context of socioeconomic development.

4. Health Care Service Management ( (24 August - 18 September 2009 )
Theory and concepts of health management, competition and corporate strategies, marketing, financial accounting and management, operation management and organization effectiveness, health care industry and policy analysis, negotiation, communication and medical informatics.

5. Statistics for Health Economics ( 28 September - 22 October 2009 )
The course focuses on the statistical tools necessary for analyzing the health care system from the statistical or survey data. More emphasis will be put on empirical applications using microcomputer. The course will cover from simple regression analysis to time series data analysis.

6. Health Care Planning ( 26 October - 20 November 2009 )
This course deals with techniques, issues and approaches to health care planning in the context of limited resources, at national and district levels. Participants will be required to identity information necessary for health care planning and policy making. Particular is sues such as efficiency and equity will be addressed.

7. Economic Analysis and Evaluation of Health Care Services ( 23November - 18 December 2009 )
This course aims to explore the nature, purpose and limitations of economic analysis and evaluation; public and private perspectives; measurement and valuation; and analysis of costs, performance and effectiveness; evaluation of cost-effectiveness, inequality and equity.

8. Health Economics Research Methods ( 21 December 2009 - 15 January 2010 )
This course covers the key principles of health economics research, including the roles of questions, hypotheses and theories in the research process, with critical review of research design and methodologies. This will lead to the ability to prepare a research proposal, including strategies for data management, analysis and communication of results.

9. Organization Management and Decision Making in the Health Sector ( 22 February - 19 March 2010 )
This course is directed to analysis and decision making in health care organizations in the private and public sectors, and to examine the decision making processes required to formulate strategic plans for their development. Attention will be given to assessment of strengths and weaknesses of modelling in relation to particular types of decisions.

10. Information Technology ( 22 MARCH - 16 APRIL 2010 )
Communications within and between private healthcare organizations; communication tools and devices; data collection and presentation; information provision services; use of information for marketing and image-building purposes; use of new information from outside sources to improve services and to make necessary changes in accordance with new government initiatives.

Staff

The short courses will be taught by the academic staffs of the Centre for Health Economics, Faculty of Economics, Chulalongkorn University, national specialists and international specialists.

Admision

Applications are invited from persons with competence in English, with a degree or equivalent in an appropriate field and with experience of health care in developing countries. Applications will be considered from health professionals who wish to appy elements of any of the above courses to make up a personal study programme, to meet their particular work requirements, to meet their particular work requirement, to improve or to support their work.
